Brief history of the Scholarship Committee

judiThe work done by the Ocean View Lodge Scholarship Committee started with Judi Engel, a long time member of the Rebekahs and Odd Fellows, (and former Noble Grand of Ocean View Lodge). Here's her story:

“Yes, the first scholarship was given out in the year 2000. We had our first fundraiser (a yard sale) in 1999, in Chris Alves's front yard. The proceeds from the yard sale and a matching contribution from Rebekahs, allowed us to give out a one thousand dollar scholarship to Raul Avilla, a musician and senior at HMB High School. It all started when I went to Rebekahs and told them that when my son graduated from HMB High in 1993, he tried to get a music scholarship in town and the only thing awarded to him was $25 from Bank of America.

They agreed to support my endeavors and the following year I started a variety show. We held it at the Lodge and through the years we proceeded to slowly increase the amounts and number of scholarships. I think the Odd Fellows came on board around the fourth year and joined in our endeavors. The fifth or sixth year we moved it from the Lodge to the Bach Dancing & Dynamite Society in Miramar. Our last show we netted $2500 from tickets, donations, refreshments and raffle. And I was spent! But it was all worthwhile. The cards, messages and goodwill in the community not to mention the thrill of the winners and their gratitude was priceless.”
