How to join Ocean View Lodge 143

Requirements for membership

You must be someone of good character, who is loyal to our country and believes in a higher being. You must be committed to serving your community and making the world a better place. Odd Fellowship is strictly nonsectarian and apolitical. You must be 18 years or older.

The Lodge requires a modest application fee and annual dues.

How to begin

We welcome new members. A candidate must be sponsored by a current member. If you know a Lodge member, ask him or her for more information about Odd Fellows and if he or she will sponsor you. Through that process we will get to know each other, and you can determine if Odd Fellowship is right for you.

We have an open potluck meeting the fourth Thursday of every month. If you do not know a current member, you are invited to attend one of these meetings and introduce yourself. Please check our calendar to verify details.

Please contact us if you plan to attend.

Pledge system

The three tasks we ask candidates to experience prior to joining are:

  1. Volunteer at one of our public events in a supporting role. This is a good way for you to see us delivering a program. This active participation also helps to convey the complexity and responsibility of owning and operating our Lodge.
  2. Attend two regularly-scheduled, fourth-Thursday, social potluck meetings to see the Lodge in action and get to know our members.
  3. Interview at least three current members, (say half hour conversations over coffee), to learn their experiences and views of Odd Fellowship and our Lodge.

The purpose of this 1-2-3 system is to benefit you, by clarifying what it entails to join Odd Fellows and what is expected of you as a member of Ocean View Lodge.

Sponsor/applicant relationship

The role of one's sponsor includes communication and support from application through attainment of the First, Second and Third Degrees, after which membership is considered to be full, with privileges to vote and hold office. The sponsor's responsibility is to be a confidant and guide, insuring good orientation and communication throughout the membership process.

After you have completed your pledge duties and applied

You will be formally interviewed by at least two representatives of the membership committee who will report back to the Lodge. This interview is your opportunity to describe your previous work with community organizations, discuss your desire for further community service, and to ask any questions you may have about Odd Fellowship. The Lodge members will vote on your application and, if approved, you will receive a letter announcing your election to membership and the date and time for initiation.
