2017 United Nations Pilgrimage for Youth Program

UN buildingOcean View Lodge #143 is proud to announce the open recruitment period for applicants to be chosen as our Lodge’s delegate to the current session of the UN Pilgrimage. The UN Pilgrimage is a two week all-expense-paid tour in July of historical sites back east in Philadelphia or Ottawa, Canada which includes a week long stay in the world renowned city of New York. Here delegates mingle with 150 or more students from across the United States and several countries of the world, exchanging views on global issues. Students will tour the United Nations building and meet with staff and UN officials. All delegates will also be given a topic that they will analyze in a 5 minute speech to be presented in a competition. Monetary prizes will be given for those judged the best.

All work and no play? Not the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs! And our UN Pilgrimage for Youth is full of fun, too. Delegates will attend a Broadway play and visit numerous famous historical (9/11 Museum and Memorial, Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, etc.) and cultural (New York’s Museum of Modern Art, New York Public Library, etc.) icons. All activities and behavior will be supervised by an adult group leader.

Eligibility requirements are that all applicants must be 16 or 17 years old by the time of departure with a minimum of one year remaining at the same high school. Ocean View Lodge judges will be looking for evidence of leadership, character, concern for community welfare, interest in world affairs and general fitness. Each applicant is required to write an essay and may be required to participate in a local speech contest as well. Parents must provide notarized written permission for their son or daughter to attend the program and to travel across the borders of the United States and Canada unaccompanied by them. A current U.S. passport, current doctor’s physical and current color photograph are also required.

Application forms are available on the UN Pilgrimage website. Applications are due to Ocean View Lodge 143 by U.S. mail postmarked by Friday, October 21, 2016. Please use the following address:
Ocean View Lodge #143
P.O. Box 712

Our chosen delegate will be announced and introduced to the membership of Ocean View Lodge at our November 10, 2016 Lodge meeting. For more information on this fine program, please see the promotional brochure available here.

Hope you are interested and ready to apply!
